Raw sewage spill closes some Cape Cod beaches

Raw sewage spill closes some Cape Cod beaches

HYANNIS -- A raw sewage spill has closed beaches in Hyannis and Yarmouth.

Officials say an equipment failure Thursday at the Old Colony pump station near the Hyannis Armory caused the sewage to back up into the buildings and empty into Hyannis Inner Harbor.

Officials say the harbor was hit with around 10,000 gallons of sewage.

Barnstable Public Health Director Thomas McKean said Friday that Veterans Beach, parts of Kalmus Beach and Hyannis Yacht Club Beach have been closed.

In Yarmouth, all public beaches on Lewis Bay are also closed.

Officials say the beaches will be closed until further notice.

Shellfishing is also prohibited in the affected areas for the next four to five days.
