Lawrence school board suspends superintendent

LAWRENCE, Mass. -- The Lawrence School Committee has placed Superintendent Wilfredo Laboy on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of a criminal probe.

The panel, chaired by Mayor Michael Sullivan, voted unanimously to suspend Laboy Thursday night after a closed-door session attended by the superintendent and his attorney.

Sullivan told the Eagle-Tribune of Lawrence after the meeting that all sides were interested in doing the best thing for the city.

In the past week, police have conducted searches at school department offices and LaBoy's Methuen home. Authorities have said the investigation involves alleged financial improprieties at the school department.

Laboy's attorney, Scott Gleason, has said he's confident the superintendent will be exonerated.
