NH tax evaders face new trial for weapons arsenal

CONCORD, N.H. -- A couple accused of holing up in their Plainfield, N.H., home to avoid serving time for tax evasion are about to go on trial again.
Ed and Elaine Brown were convicted in 2007 of not paying federal taxes on nearly $2 million in income. They fled mid-trial to their fortress-like home, where prosecutors say they surrounded themselves with an arsenal of homemade bombs, booby-traps and weapons before being captured without incident nine months later.
Jury selection begins Monday on weapons and conspiracy charges that could keep them in prison for the rest of their lives.
The Browns, who represented themselves at the tax trial, contended no law authorizes the federal income tax and that the 1913 constitutional amendment permitting it was never properly ratified.
