Cambridge jail still cleaning up after inmate revolt

BOSTON -- Officials at a county jail in Cambridge are still trying to dry out the facility after a group of inmates allegedly broke the building's sprinkler system.

Middlesex County Sheriff spokesman Michael Hardigan said Monday that officials are "cleaning and repairing" the jail and are hoping to have it operating again soon.

Officials say several Middlesex jail inmates became unruly Sunday morning after 15 of them were sent to area hospitals with flu-like symptoms. Inmates broke the fire suppression system, causing the sprinklers to go off and flood the building.

Hardigan said inmates were evacuated to other county jails in Essex, Norfolk and to Middlesex's Billerica jail.

No new charges have been filed against any inmates.
