Woman dies after husband backs over her

DENNIS, Mass. -- An 83-year-old woman police say was struck as her 92-year-old husband backed their car out of a parking space at a Cape Cod yacht club has died.

A spokeswoman for Cape Cod Hospital tells WXTK-FM that Muriel Weldon of Reading was pronounced dead approximately an hour after she was struck just after 8 p.m. Sunday.

Police say John Weldon was backing his car out of a parking spot at the West Dennis Yacht Club when it suddenly accelerated and struck his wife. Investigators say Muriel Weldon was standing behind the car and giving directions.

The accident remains under investigation.

Massachusetts is considering testing older drivers more often after a series of accidents in recent weeks involving elderly motorists.
