Captain, Navy crew in piracy rescue to reunite
NORFOLK, Va. -- A guided-missile destroyer has arrived in Norfolk for a reunion with the American merchant captain the crew helped rescue from pirates off of Africa.
The USS Bainbridge left Naval Base Norfolk and sailed 3 miles down the Elizabeth River to downtown Norfolk on Thursday for its rendezvous with Capt. Richard Phillips, the New Englander who was held by Somali pirates in April.
Phillips was freed after Navy SEAL snipers shot and killed three of his captors.
Phillips is to join the crew and Capt. Frank X. Castellano on the ship later Thursday to publicly thank them.
Wednesday, Somali pirates attacked Phillips' old ship, the Maersk Alabama, for the second time in seven months but were turned away.
