Wicked weather and whipping winds in New England
BOSTON -- The wind left its mark across New England today, causing major problems in many neighborhoods and on highways.
In Smithfield, Rhode Island, a tree took out a home. Fortunately, everyone escaped uninjured.
"It was very windy, and like a train sound, and then you heard a sick crash," said a local woman of the incident.
In Connecticut, a woman on her way home from the Westfield Mall fell victim to a very strong wind gust when a tree fell down and crushed her car.
"Her vehicle was in motion at the time, and because of the high winds, a tree fell on her vehicle as she was passing by. She suffered some serious injuries and she was taken to Hartford Hospital where she is currently being treated for those injuries," said a local police officer.
Closer to Boston, winds took trees down in Roxbury.
Gusts also sent sparks flying in North Reading. A power line fell on top of a house, starting a small fire. A teenager inside the home escaped without injury.
While flames lit part of North Reading, 70,000 people in New Hampshire were left in the dark. Weather brought down power lines, creating a major power outage.
Gusts in Boston are still strong, but have calmed down considerably since this afternoon.
