Plow driver in alleged hit-and-run to be charged

PLYMPTON, Mass. -- A plow driver suspected in a hit and run that left a woman seriously injured in Plympton will face criminal charges.

Police said a man from Halifax was behind the wheel of a plow when he hit 47-year old Mary Burke and drove off. The man admitted he hit Burke and is now facing charges.

Tuesday night, police towed a tarp-covered SUV with a plow out of a Halifax driveway. Armed with a search warrant, Plympton police brought it to the State Police Crime Lab for testing.

Officers said the vehicle's owner, Robert Savastano of Halifax, admitted to hitting Burke Monday night on Main Street in Plympton.

Police said he fled the scene and triggered a statewide search.

The RMV has revoked Savastano's license indefinitely. Until now, his driving record was clean.

Savastano has been summonsed to court in connection to the crash.

Witnesses said the crash was horrifying.

"I just seen her in the street. I seen a glove, and when I looked ten to twenty feet down the road, I could see her body. Somebody just hit her and kept going," said Chuck Randolph, a witness.

The accident broke Burke's back, both legs, and collapsed one of her lungs. She underwent surgery on Monday night and her condition at Brigham and Women's Hospital has been upgraded to serious.

Savastano is facing multiple charges, including leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident after knowingly causing personal injury.
