Anonymous defaces MIT site after Reddit co-founder's death
BOSTON (WHDH) -- An online group defaced MIT’s website after the co-founder of Reddit committed suicide.
26-year-old Aaron Swartz was found dead in his Brooklyn apartment Friday night.
He was scheduled to go on trial in a few weeks.
Two years ago, Swartz was charged with stealing millions of scientific articles from MIT.
Swartz said he wanted to make the stolen articles freely available.
His family is blaming prosecutors for his death.
Hours after MIT pledged to investigate its actions prior to the suicide; the hacking group Anonymous targeted at least two MIT websites.
The group posted a message on the sites.
The message calls for reform in the memory of Swartz.
MIT’s president, L. Rafael Reif released a statement saying, "I want to express very clearly that I and all of us at MIT are extremely saddened by the death of this promising young man who touched the lives of so many. It pains me to think that MIT played any role in a series of events that have ended in tragedy."
MIT has not made a statement regarding the recent defacement of their website.
