BELMONT, Mass. (WHDH) -- Belmont school officials said breathalyzer tests could be used at school dances and other functions to help prevent teen drinking.

“Students who come to the event would be tested to make sure they had no alcohol in their breath,” said Dr. Thomas Kingston, superintendent of Belmont schools.

The reason for the chance is because the school’s 2005 luau dance ended in chaos.

“There are always people that are somewhat drunk, but not everyone falling over and puking all over the place,” said one student.

Several students were rushed to the hospital with alcohol poisoning.

“I saw them take a kid out on a stretcher,” said another student.

“We certainly don’t want that kind of incident to occur again,” said Kingston.

Ever since the 2005 incident, Belmont High School has kept dances to a minimum. Some students say more dances with a breathalyzer present is fine by them.

“I think it’s fair because kids like to drink and what not,” said Antonio Montalvo, student.

Others aren’t so sure.

“I think a lot of people are mad about it because they don’t’ want to be tested randomly,” said Alexa Bassler, student.

“I don’t think it’s really worth it,” said Alana Khougaeva, student.

“If anything it’s going to mean a lot less people are going to dances,” said Nick Chao, student.

Belmont will join a number of school districts when the breathalyzer plan goes into effect later in the year.
