WAREHAM, Mass. (WHDH) -- A violent wrong-way crash injured three people and shut down part of I-495. One of the victims suffered life-threatening injuries.

State police got a call after midnight about a wrong-way driver on I-495 Northbound. As patrol cars were responding, the driver of the pickup truck, which was driving the wrong way down I-495, apparently smashed into two other cars.

The driver of the pickup was ejected from their car and a woman in a second sedan apparently had to be extricated from her vehicle. There was a third person hurt only with minor injury but taken to the hospital as a precaution.

It was unclear why the driver was going the wrong way on the highway.

State Police shut down I-495 near Exit 2 for a couple of hours as they tried to reconstruct the accident. State Police said even though the driver will be charged, they are trying to figure out what the charges will be.
