SEABROOK, N.H. (WHDH) -- A man recently honored for his work with the developmentally disabled faced charges Friday for kidnapping, sexual assault and indecent exposure.

John Riley, 41, of Milton, NH is being held at the Rockingham County jail. He was arrested Thursday night and was arraigned via video at a court in Seabrook, N.H. on Friday. He has no criminal record.

Riley works at Living Innovations in Portsmouth, N.H. a center catering to the needs of developmentally disabled adults. Last fall he was named “Direct Support Professional of the Year” by New Hampshire’s Council on Developmental Disabilities. He won $500 and was recognized by the governor.

The department’s prosecutor told the judge the victim was assaulted in the parking lot of a Home Depot on Nov. 2 and the victim is developmentally disabled. Police said the assault involved oral sex on that man.

“The victim in this case, your honor, is a 35-year-old male who has a mental acuity of approximately an 8-year-old, your honor. This was not a random act. The state feels the victim in this case was groomed for a period of time before this act took place and we feel that he is a danger to the community at large,” said the prosecutor.

Court documents show that Riley admitted to performing oral sex on the victim, but he pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Riley is being held on $30,000 cash bail. He is being ordered to stay away from the developmentally disabled, from the places he worked and from anyone under the age of 18.
