Suspect held on $15,000 bail in storage thefts

REVERE, Mass. -- A suspect accused of robbing at least 79 storage units in Revere appeared in Chelsea District Court Wednesday where he faced more than 20 charges.
Daniel Stimpson, a 40-year-old father of two, allegedly gained entrance to the Extra Space storage facility on Revere Beach Parkway with a keypad code only a few people had. Police said Stimpson worked hard at trying to fool the staff, making the broken padlocks on the units look perfectly normal after breaking into them.
“When you pulled on it, though, the padlock popped open and it was clear that it had been jimmied. But there was some purposeful attempt to reset it and make it look like everything was alright,” said a prosecutor.
Prosecutors say Stimpson didn’t realize he was being videotaped by surveillance cameras that caught him in the act.
“They discovered a total of 79 units had damaged locks,” said a prosecutor.
One victim said more than $8,000 worth of electronics was stolen.
“He really had time to do what he did because they opened each and every one…box, because they had some…and he just opened it and he left it all a mess,” said Yeni Galdamez, a victim.
Stimpson allegedly told police that he had a heroin problem. The prosecution said he has two other cases pending in Boston and is a suspect at a break-in at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Stimpson faces 24 charges that include breaking and entering, larceny and trespassing. Investigators expect there will be more charges filed in this case once more people who store items in the units realize their belongings are gone.
Stimpson is being held on $15,000 cash bail. He returns to court on March 1.
