WILMINGTON, Mass. (WHDH) -- With spray paint in hand, vandals made a mess in Wilmington, writing messages across three churches.

To make matters worse, the vandalism was discovered this morning right at the start of some funerals.

Now, police are searching for those vandals.

“It’s terrible,” said a parishioner.

“If people have a point to make, they should make it in the public square and have their opinion heard. This is defacing property. It’s vandalism,” said a parishioner.

The father of two of the churches targeted believes the vandals hit between

Midnight and 3 a.m. Saturday. It all appears related, red spray-paint and the word "brain-washing.” Parishioners are outraged.

“They’re sick themselves. Plain and simple. They have nothing better to do in life but to cause problems and chaos,” said a parishioner.

“It’s kind of sad because people worship here and they come in here, to see a religious, any religious place, it’s sad,” said a parishioner.

The St. Thomas of Villanova was likely the hardest hit. The costs have not been determined, but it could be in the thousands.

Police are currently investigating the situation and asking for anyone with information to contact them.
