BOSTON -- Heavy rain and flooding has led Gov. Deval Patrick to declare a state of emergency in Massachusetts.

Communities across the Bay State dealt with severe flooding on Monday.

People in Waltham had to be taken to safety by a front-end loader.

In Wilmington, some residents used boats as transportation.

“It’s a battle you can’t win,” said Trish Driscoll of Fall Street.

The backyards of Driscoll became a swimming pool as it continued to rain.

Another Fall Street resident, John Rundlett, knew he was in trouble when the shed in the backyard began to float away. He managed to pull the shed back to drier land

Driscoll dealt with rain issues at their home three times before, but in the past, she was able to use a wet vacuum to clean up the mess.

Residents on Canal Street reported flooding in basements as well.
