WEBSTER, Mass. (WHDH) -- A Webster man is recovering in the hospital after police say his friend accidentally shot him in the stomach.

The 911 call came in minutes before midnight on New Year's Eve.

Lee Broiles lives next door.

“Next thing I know, the squad cars are all out in front and I just am looking and I don’t know what was going on,” Lee Broiles, a neighbor.

Webster police say 24-year-old Daniel Grenon accidentally shot his friend in the stomach -- the tragic result of a bizarre game involving a knife and a gun.

“They were seeing who could draw their weapon faster,” said Lt. Michael Shaw, Webster Police Department.

Police say Grenon took out the magazine, but forgot about the bullet in the chamber.

“So when he drew, he pulled the trigger, it went off striking his friend in the lower abdomen,” said Lt. Shaw.

The 24-year-old victim is said to have serious injuries.

“To hear that two guys were playing a game -- who could draw faster and someone gets shot -- it’s rather asinine,” Broiles said.

There was no answer at Grenon's home Wednesday night. He was arrested and charged with assault and battery, but posted bail.

Grenon had a license to carry; now he doesn't.

“There’s a difference between violence and stupidity, this was just stupidity,” Broiles said.

The victim is in stable condition in the hospital.

Police say they took all of Grenon’s firearms and ammunition.
