PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Time is running out for Rhode Islanders affected by Superstorm Sandy who hope to apply for federal disaster assistance.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency says applicants for assistance must register before Jan. 14.

FEMA Coordinating Officer James Russo says residents who experienced losses in the storm should register even if they aren't sure they qualify for assistance.

FEMA says more than 500 households have registered for assistance so far. They've received more than $800,000 in grants and loans to pay for repairs, rent, medical bills and other expenses.
