ACUSHNET, Mass. (WHDH) -- A rookie firefighter came to the rescue of a woman trapped inside a burning home in Acushnet.

He's not just a rookie; he's barely out of high school and just finished training six months ago. But the 19-year-old definitely earned his stripes and the accolades facing the flames and saving the woman's life.

Volunteer firefighter Adam Hebert got the critical call just after 11 p.m. Sunday: a two-story house fire on Coulumbe Street.

“Arrived on scene and I saw the flames shooting out the side and I said, ‘Wow, I got a big fire here,’” said Hebert.

Inside, Hebert and other crew members found a 52-year-old woman on the second floor.

She had severe burns to her feet and had breathing trouble due to the smoke. But they were able to save her before it was too late.

“Just did what I had to do, like training, it was instinct,” said Hebert.

The Acushnet fire chief says rescues are a rarity in the town.

“And amazingly coincidentally our last fire with a rescue was 21 years ago at the same home,” said Chief Kevin Gallagher, Acushnet Fire Department.

That fire happened two years before Heber was even born.

As for this fire rescue, the team credits the success to the tight bond Hebert shares with Acushnet firefighters, including his cousin.
