Well it's here. The end of 2012. The year that saw a mild winter/spring combo and a sizzling summer. We fell short on the precipitation, but won big in the hurricane lottery with Sandy making a pass around Halloween...which seems to be turning into quite a stormy time period here in New England.
And how do we go out? Um, kinda like we went in. Without a peep from any storms, and without a lot of cold.
Sure, 32 is pretty chilly, and it's going to feel like the mid 20s with a breeze, but it could be much, much colder...if we didn't have clouds. Clouds act as a blanket and reradiate the "heat" that would normally escape into the mid/upper atmosphere at night. The end result is a slow drop in the temperatures. In our case, it will only drop to about 31 in the city tonight.
Tomorrow, although the cold will be funneling in, there won't be a whole lot of chill. Highs make the mid and upper 30s with increasing sun. Not too shabby, right? Well, all the while the arctic air will be oozing in. We'll fall to single digits and low 10s by Wednesday morning. But here again, it could be worse. Low temperatures across Northern New England will fall to the teens below zero!
And that looks to be the rule this week. The coldest air will nestle in for the long haul to the north, but we'll just get a glancing shot with mid and upper 20s on Wed/Thu.
Happy New Year everyone! Be safe, be sensible and be home by 11pm.

Although my forecast was busted today, there was one good thing that came out of it.
Stability.
That gray overcast that hung over the eastern half of the Commonwealth provided a stablizing influence to our atmosphere. The cool air blowing in from the ocean kept the temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s all the way back to Metrowest. While that makes for lousy short-and-t-shirt weather, it is poison to thunderstorms.

What a day! Breakneck temperature swings, thunder, tornadoes in Western Mass....and we're still in late May!

With the snap of the fingers we were thrown into summer this afternoon. Heat, humidity, A/C and shorts - with a hazy sun to boot. But with the sea breeze knocking back the temperatures (and bringing in a round of downpours this evening), there are changes afoot.

Well, it certainly was a great weekend weather-wise until this afternoon when the temps dropped and light showers moved in from west to east. Despite the cool down, the theme for this upcoming week is warmer with higher humidity. It'll also be unsettled at times.
