January, Why So Cold?!

Posted by Jeremy Reiner

The post holiday blues may be setting in--happens every year and it's no different this year. I blame the weather---too darn cold. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love winter and snow but days like the next couple are clunkers. You know, or will soon remember, as we have cold conditions all day long and a feisty breeze adding insult to injury.

Temps this morning are running in the lower teens & single numbers and despite a fair amount of sunshine on the way, we'll only see afternoon high temps reach the mid 20s (wind chills in the mid teens). What makes it even worse is while we are plowing through our work & school days a reinforcement of cold, arctic air will surge into New England tonight. Look for overnight lows to go even lower on Thursday morning than where we are this morning with many towns into the single numbers. Thursday itself offers more sunshine but also cold weather from start to finish with most towns only flirting with the mid 20s by afternoon.

The good news with all this cold, arctic air is that it will push the storm track deep into the south for the next several days keeping storminess out of New England right through the upcoming weekend.

Good luck getting back to the grind today!

Peace.

Rain, rain, rain...

...but for many today was a day of hurry up and wait. Sure there were showers, but not every minute was washed out. With the events unfolding tonight, that's about to change.

Come On Ride The Train

Heavy rain is on the move! All afternoon long it was stalled over Western Massachusetts and Connecticut. Heavy pulses of rain traveled over the same towns and cities - a process meteorologists call "training" - resulting in flash flooding in some counties to our west.

Saved by The Sea Breeze

Although my forecast was busted today, there was one good thing that came out of it.

Stability.

That gray overcast that hung over the eastern half of the Commonwealth provided a stablizing influence to our atmosphere. The cool air blowing in from the ocean kept the temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s all the way back to Metrowest. While that makes for lousy short-and-t-shirt weather, it is poison to thunderstorms.

What a day! Breakneck temperature swings, thunder, tornadoes in Western Mass....and we're still in late May!
