Bitterly cold temperatures this morning. Haven't seen the likes of this since...
...last winter. OK, that's not saying much, but in some cases - at Blue Hill (2°) and Pepperell (-8°) it was the coldest in two years! The senior weather spotters we have in our collective remember when mornings like this were common in winter.
So am I pro-snow/cold or pro-warm/no snow? I am neither. I enjoy the best of every season. But as a go-between, I'll tell you that there are few subjects in weather that are more divisive.
For the warm weather fans, the arctic air is already in retreat. Won't really notice it tonight, since temperatures will still bottom out in the teens. By morning, however, we should bounce back to the 20s. And although the arctic air peels back, it's not like we're rocketing into the 40s and 50s anytime soon.
Through the weekend, we'll remain on the southernmost edge of the cold air. That leads to temperatures in the 30s and lows in the 20s. It's not until the middle of next week that we see the numbers respond to a shift in the jetstream and catapult us into the mid and upper 40s. It's not panic time for the outdoor ice rinks, as this warmup looks to last only into next weekend. Couple of rain events are in the pipeline too.

Rain and drizzle continues tonight as temperatures drop into the mid 30s to 40 degrees. Any burst of heavier precip drags down colder air, and elevations above 1000 feet in northern Worcester County or southwester NH see wet snow mixing in overnight. No shovels or plows needed for us, but it is a sure sign how cold the atmosphere is for late May. As of this writing, Mt. Mansfield in VT has picked up 7.5" of snow and Whiteface Mtn. in NY has picked up 18"!

So it's the unofficial start of summer this weekend and officially, the average high this time of year hits 70 degrees. So you'd think we have a good shot at BBQ weather right? Not much of a chance today with highs reaching near 50 this morning, only to fall back into the low to mid 40s this afternoon as a cold rain settles in.

Rain, rain, rain...
...but for many today was a day of hurry up and wait. Sure there were showers, but not every minute was washed out. With the events unfolding tonight, that's about to change.

Heavy rain is on the move! All afternoon long it was stalled over Western Massachusetts and Connecticut. Heavy pulses of rain traveled over the same towns and cities - a process meteorologists call "training" - resulting in flash flooding in some counties to our west.
