You wanna crown it a thaw, crown it a thaw. But you first have to have a winter. So far, we've only had 9 below normal days (three were only 1 degree below normal) since (meteorological) winter began on December 1st. That's an awful lot of above normal weather - 4 were in double digit warmth.
This new pattern is nothing foreign to us. We've been here before - this was the same pattern we had before the big (and brief) freeze around the holidays. Will we return to the cold? Perhaps, but that is for later forecasts. As we all know, long range forecasts (7-10 days) can be riddled

with error.
In the meantime, it's all about above normal temperatures. Highs tomorrow and Wednesday will jump (but not soar) into the 40s. This won't put us in meltdown mode, but it will chew away a lot of snowcover. For those with backyard ice rinks, nighttime temps will still drop below freezing each night. It's not until late week that we might have some issues with complete meltdowns. By then, overnight low temperatures will be near or a little above freezing (Fri-Sun). It's also when we might make a run at the upper 50s for the Pats game!
There is only one weather system in the pipeline this week. It comes late on Friday with a good batch of rain. Should exit by Saturday morning without a whisper of cold air behind it.

Rain and drizzle continues tonight as temperatures drop into the mid 30s to 40 degrees. Any burst of heavier precip drags down colder air, and elevations above 1000 feet in northern Worcester County or southwester NH see wet snow mixing in overnight. No shovels or plows needed for us, but it is a sure sign how cold the atmosphere is for late May. As of this writing, Mt. Mansfield in VT has picked up 7.5" of snow and Whiteface Mtn. in NY has picked up 18"!

So it's the unofficial start of summer this weekend and officially, the average high this time of year hits 70 degrees. So you'd think we have a good shot at BBQ weather right? Not much of a chance today with highs reaching near 50 this morning, only to fall back into the low to mid 40s this afternoon as a cold rain settles in.

Rain, rain, rain...
...but for many today was a day of hurry up and wait. Sure there were showers, but not every minute was washed out. With the events unfolding tonight, that's about to change.

Heavy rain is on the move! All afternoon long it was stalled over Western Massachusetts and Connecticut. Heavy pulses of rain traveled over the same towns and cities - a process meteorologists call "training" - resulting in flash flooding in some counties to our west.
