Cold air settles into New England today as high temps struggle to get out of the 20s. We've even had snow this morning across the Cape, with many towns picking up 1-3", although closer to 4" on Nantucket. With the exception of the outer Cape experiencing ocean effect snow showers through the rest of this morning, most of us see returning sun. That sun doesn't help us out too much in the temp department as highs struggle to clear the 20s.
We'll warm up for the weekend, but the warm-up is brief as temps start crashing back down Sunday night. If you're heading to Gillette, there will be quite a spread of temperatures throughout the day. Near 40 in the early afternoon, near 30 at kickoff and in the 20s by the end of the game. Factor in the breeze, and wind chill factors head to the teens.
That's just the tip of the iceberg as we go freezer cold by mid-week. Temps start near zero Wednesday morning, and stay in the teens during the afternoon. The cold has some staying power next week, lasting at least Monday-Thursday... making this brief weekend recovery temperature-wise see like a failed attempt at a warmer pattern. We'll take the nicer weather on the weekend though!
Go Pats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rain, rain, rain...
...but for many today was a day of hurry up and wait. Sure there were showers, but not every minute was washed out. With the events unfolding tonight, that's about to change.

Heavy rain is on the move! All afternoon long it was stalled over Western Massachusetts and Connecticut. Heavy pulses of rain traveled over the same towns and cities - a process meteorologists call "training" - resulting in flash flooding in some counties to our west.

Although my forecast was busted today, there was one good thing that came out of it.
Stability.
That gray overcast that hung over the eastern half of the Commonwealth provided a stablizing influence to our atmosphere. The cool air blowing in from the ocean kept the temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s all the way back to Metrowest. While that makes for lousy short-and-t-shirt weather, it is poison to thunderstorms.

What a day! Breakneck temperature swings, thunder, tornadoes in Western Mass....and we're still in late May!
