Rain Up Front, Snow In Back Seat

Massive storm is spinning up through the Midwest tonight. It will slingshot an area of rain up the Eastern Seaboard, aimed directly at New England.

While the cold pockets of air are still holding through Metrowest and The Merrimack Valley, a powerful east wind will pop those towns and cities into the 40s come tomorrow. The only strongholds of cold are the higher elevations of Worcester county. It's there where the east wind meets upsloped terrain and we get most of our accumulation:

We're not coming away unscathed in Greater Boston, however. The rain will hammer us throughout the day, finally tapering from 5-6pm in the afternoon. By the time the puddles drain, MOST spots will have 1-1.5 inches of rain. Keep in mind too that while the NEW snow (indicated by that light blue shading above) will melt, the old snow (and the 2-4 and higher over Worcester county) will only slump and ABSORB the rain. This isn't a panacea for eliminating snowpack folks.

Well, one thing's for sure. For the 1st time in 4 weeks, we get a weekend without a storm. That means sun will rule, but the temperatures won't soar. We'll keep it "even Steven" with highs near 40.

Take it slow in the rain (and early snow) tomorrow morning.

Saved by The Sea Breeze

Although my forecast was busted today, there was one good thing that came out of it.

Stability.

That gray overcast that hung over the eastern half of the Commonwealth provided a stablizing influence to our atmosphere. The cool air blowing in from the ocean kept the temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s all the way back to Metrowest. While that makes for lousy short-and-t-shirt weather, it is poison to thunderstorms.

What a day! Breakneck temperature swings, thunder, tornadoes in Western Mass....and we're still in late May!

Summ-ah!

With the snap of the fingers we were thrown into summer this afternoon. Heat, humidity, A/C and shorts - with a hazy sun to boot. But with the sea breeze knocking back the temperatures (and bringing in a round of downpours this evening), there are changes afoot.

Warming Up and Unsettled

Well, it certainly was a great weekend weather-wise until this afternoon when the temps dropped and light showers moved in from west to east.  Despite the cool down, the theme for this upcoming week is warmer with higher humidity.  It'll also be unsettled at times.
