The storm is here--sort of. For some of you, it's snow & wind while for others it's just cloudy skies with a few flurries. Plan on a messy day for much of southern New England---especially across southeast New England. We have made some changes to the snowfall forecast since last night....for the area between I-95 and Rt 24 across Bristol county---our special map reflects those changes (higher totals). Here's the latest thinking regarding the storm:
*Snow is steadiest along & east of I-95 and as you approach the coastline, raindrops will take over at the coast later this morning for a few hours.
*Patchy snow is expected west of I-95 this morning but it will become steadier by afternoon & this evening.
*Plan on widespread-steady snow for just about everyone tonight---this is when we get most of our accumulating snows.
*Some of that snow is going to be the heavy-wet variety and that combined with wind may lead to power disruption--especially across southeast MA. Even along the coast & out onto the Cape--scattered power loss is likely due to wind gusts between 40-50mph for several hours today through tomorrow.
*Coastal flooding is a concern for the high tides this morning (~7am), this evening (~7pm) and especially tomorrow morning (~8am). The Friday morning high tide will be the most problematic of the three. Minor coastal flooding (some shore roads closed) is likely for all 3 high tides in metro Boston & points north with moderate to major coastal flooding (shore roads & basements flooded with minor structural damage likely) on the south shore out onto Cape Cod (bay side). Beach erosion will be incredible with this event---our beaches have been hammered the past 5-6 weeks.
*Storm is a slow mover so look for morning snow & wind tomorrow that will slowly taper to clouds by early Friday afternoon.
*Sunny & warmer weather does return just in time for the weekend.
More through the day.

So it's the unofficial start of summer this weekend and officially, the average high this time of year hits 70 degrees. So you'd think we have a good shot at BBQ weather right? Not much of a chance today with highs reaching near 50 this morning, only to fall back into the low to mid 40s this afternoon as a cold rain settles in.

Rain, rain, rain...
...but for many today was a day of hurry up and wait. Sure there were showers, but not every minute was washed out. With the events unfolding tonight, that's about to change.

Heavy rain is on the move! All afternoon long it was stalled over Western Massachusetts and Connecticut. Heavy pulses of rain traveled over the same towns and cities - a process meteorologists call "training" - resulting in flash flooding in some counties to our west.

Although my forecast was busted today, there was one good thing that came out of it.
Stability.
That gray overcast that hung over the eastern half of the Commonwealth provided a stablizing influence to our atmosphere. The cool air blowing in from the ocean kept the temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s all the way back to Metrowest. While that makes for lousy short-and-t-shirt weather, it is poison to thunderstorms.
